I participated in Jim's 4-week leadership seminar this fall and we utilized this coursebook along with the Epicenter Fable. Having just celebrated my 5 year college reunion, I was looking to refocus and "tune up" my life. EPICENTER proved to be a valuable resource to me and so I want to share my experience with others.I've started several successful small businesses over the past 10+ years and I have completed my fair share of personality tests, seminars, leadership books, etc. In this time, however, I've never come across a SINGLE resource that brings all of these concepts together in the way this book did. Simply put, this book "connects the dots." We are taught to do what we love, or to do what we are good at, or to give what other people want - However, we don't often realize that the sweet spot in life is in discovering where all these things converge - Your Epicenter.
If we are able to understand what we ENJOY doing, what we're GOOD at doing, and can PROVIDE this VALUE to society, then we are "connecting the dots" and are better poised to live a happy and successful life. I recommend this book to ANYONE willing to put the time in to better know themselves.

This coursebook helps young people better understand their own temperament and passions. It then guides them on how to use that knowledge to find a career that will be both fulfilling and economically viable. As a senior in college this process helped me better understand myself, re-think my career direction, and provide me with more confidence to articulate my value to potential employers. I would highly recommend this book to any college student as it teaches you principles that aren't taught in the classroom.
This is a great resource for people just getting started on their careers, and lives. And it's not just words of wisdom, although there are plenty of those. It's practical tips and exercises connected to a great narrative that help you work through what you can and ought to do to get more of your life and work. Many people don't have the benefit of a great mentor early in their careers as they are making critical decisions that will define their paths forever. This coursebook offers the next best thing -- the hard-won advice of a very successful leader who has distilled from his experience the insights about how to navigate forward, and insights made accessible in an entertaining and pragmatic way. I highly recommend this series!
Since the late 1980s, I’ve been pioneering, writing, teaching and coaching about the power of being “On-Purpose.” Why? EPICENTER should be a mandatory course in every business school. Life explorers searching for answers have many assessment and diagnostic tools to choose from but none are as comprehensive and well integrated as Jim Sullivan's EPICENTER. Having used some of these tools throughout my life and career, I’ve sometimes struggled to knit them together into a coherent whole. I appreciated Jim's approach for clarifying the forest that exists amongst frequently distracting trees, and found tracking through his methodology as enlightening as it was unintimidating.
While EPICENTER is specifically styled for younger users at the start of their careers (including the use of a compelling fable, with its effectively familiar slices-of-life and shocks-of-recognition), I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it even for a more mature audience who, in this era of later retirements and longer lifetimes, faces a second challenge of personal reinvention.
Thanks to Mr. Sullivan for showing us that the "epic" nature of life is, in fact, within our reach and for providing us with an approach that increases our ability to grasp it.
