Thoroughly updated, Learning Python, Second Edition introduces the basic elements of the latest release of Python 2.3 and covers new features, such as list comprehensions, nested scopes, and iterators/generators. Beyond language features, it also includes new context for less-experienced programmers, including fresh overviews of object-oriented programming and dynamic typing, new discussions of program launch and configuration options, new coverage of documentation sources, and more. There are also new use cases throughout to make the application of language features more concrete. The first part of Learning Python gives programmers all the information they'll need to understand and construct programs in the Python language, including types, operators, statements, classes, functions, modules and exceptions. The authors then present more advanced material, showing how Python performs common tasks by offering real applications and the libraries available for those applications. Each chapter ends with a series of exercises that will test your Python skills and measure your understanding.

Mark's other book "Programming Python" was superior in style and treatment, but outdated in its coverage of topics , for my purposes. I needed in-depth coverage along with realistic examples, of things like Classes, Decorators etc. I really like "Learning Python" for 2 things - clear explanations, and good examples. I found several authors' explanations kind of hurried. And when it comes to examples authors either get too complex, or too 'other worldly' , meaning you'll basically be distracted by the example. (At least one of the two often happens to me).The same style, and approach is maintained from his other book.

Learning Python Mark Lutz 9788184048261 Books Reviews
I rarely go out of my way to leave a review for a book I've read, but after I saw all the negativity towards this book, which I think is fantastic, I couldn't help but interject my opinions
I come from a background with lots of C/C++ experience, and I still feel that this book had lots to offer. Lutz goes out of his way to make sure that beginners and experienced programmers alike will understand the nuances of the language. It is indeed a very thick book, but the wordiness is only an artifact of Lutz's desire to be completely thorough, and it does read much more quickly than many other programming texts, which are shorter yet more plodding.
His descriptions and numerous examples give absolute clarity to all the details of the Python language; not only basic implementation, but common mistakes and corner cases to avoid. THe book works equally well as a read-through introduction to the language or as a reference to be flipped through as needed.
My only complaint about this book is its dearth of practice exercises; they only come at the end of every 4-5 chapters, and I would have preferred more promts for interactivity along the way to get me programming. Still, 5/5 stars - I can't recommend this highly enough.
